11-Oct-2001 Sex is simply defined as the collection of all activities satisfies the urge of sexual desire. Sex is a very hot and spicy subject everywhere; when it comes to premarital sex it become highly inflammable. Majority of our precursors thought , premarital sex as a taboo but most of the new generation fellows raise their hands for premarital sex and Live in relationships. Why this controversy? Is premarital sex is such a hot topic? Why sexual abuse in a developing country like India is on rise?
Sexuality has been associated with a range of human activities and values: the procreation of children, the attainment of physical pleasure (eroticism), recreation or sport, personal intimacy, spiritual transcendence, or power over others. It is found that most young people assume that although platonic love exists, one cannot be in love with someone unless he or she is sexually attracted to the beloved. For most young people, to be in love means desiring the other sexually. Today, anthropologists and evolutionary psychologists generally assume that passionate love and sexual desire are cultural universals.
From the anthropological researches it is clear that romantic love is a pan-human characteristic and it has always existed in all times and in all places but it should be rarely encouraged. Throughout history, most powerful political and religious authorities viewed passionate lovers` elemental and powerful feelings as a threat to the political, religious, and social order. Acting upon personal desires elicited a kind of individualism which could, if unleashed, challenge the rule makers; hence, they endeavored to suppress such dangerous feelings. In the West, during the early Christian era, for instance, suppression was especially harsh. In those days, love was not expected to end well. Romeo and Juliet, Ophelia and Hamlet, Abelard and Eloise did not make love, get married, have two children, and live happily ever after. Romeo swallowed poison. Juliet stabbed herself. Ophelia went mad and drowned herself. Hamlet was felled by a poisoned sword point. Peter Abelard (a real person) was castrated and his beloved Eloise retired to a nunnery. In Japan, love suicides have been an institution since the end of the 17th century.
Historically, different cultural groups have possessed very different ideas as to how society should deal with passionate love and sexual desire. The major cultural traditions were East Asia, South Asia, Middle East, and western culture but none of them could match the power and influence of those four. Until 1500, the concept of “one world” barely existed. All that changed after 1500. In the wake of the Age of Discovery, the Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution, and the Industrial Revolution, everything changed. In the psychological sphere, “Westernization” (or “modernization”) has meant an increasing insistence on individualism, on a search for and justification of the attainment of personal happiness and the reduction of pain, and on a belief that things can change. They were succeeded in applying these ideas; as a result women’s share equal status with gents, children instead of being seen as a miniature adult. Cultures of resignation and collectivism began to be replaced by cultures of possibility, hope, and individualism. These and the other factors made up the psychological revolution which has transformed modern life and continues to do so.
Arrival of Western Culture
With the arrival of most modern technologies live visual media, internet, satellite communications and expanded travels, helps the non-western peoples to choose the best from the west and rejecting the rest. But many ethnic groups try to resist the expansion of western culture. So there is a dialectic conflict between westernize and its resistance. It remains to be seen whether a nation can accept science, technology, rock and roll, and capitalism and keep out gender equality, democracy, avaricious materialism, and individualism.
Don’t forget that whenever we suppress individual freedom it will explode in the form of revolution. Here in this case also religious and political, rulers suppress the sexual freedom of individuals, and these restrictions increase the crime rates. For example In Burma and Thailand very young girls are commonly coerced into prostitution. In Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, household maids are often beaten and raped. The list of abuses include female infanticide, genital mutilation, the sale of brides, dowry murders, suttee (in India, widows are still sometimes required to immolate themselves on their husbands` funeral pyres), and discriminatory laws against women`s civic, social, and legal equality. The best way to resolve this problem is promote women’s liberation give equal status to her.
Traditionally, many religions—including Christianity and most varieties of Hinduism and Buddhism, laboring to stem the tide of individualism and self-interest—asked people to accept what was given, to repress individual desire, indeed to regard such desire as sin. Authoritarians, political and religious, have worked with great success to sell these propositions to their constituencies; they have been concerned with maintaining order and keeping down the unwashed masses. we might expect societies around the world to begin to accept a more positive view of passionate love and sexual desire (no longer seeing them as evil).
Views in the Indian Tradition
When comes to Indian culture, the tradition is like from back home was no sex before marriage. And in olden times that was not very hard to achieve. Because it was not easy for a man and a woman to have time and space available to engage in sex. Second there was fear of being caught because of unwanted pregnancy. Third there was fear of bringing shame to the whole family if caught. Fourth the marriage age was much younger than nowadays. Sex is enjoyable with couples when they are truly in love they learn to give pleasure to their partner over a period. Even married couples and in love cannot enjoy sex to its fullest, if they are under pressure of any kind may be a financial problem or issues between them which are not resolved. Most of the sacred religious textbooks say a lot about Sex. Many old paintings and sculptures are can be seen with a sexual angle.
With reference to all the above facts, my suggestions are
After all one should love the presence of somebody and if she/he enjoys having sex with you; why do you then hesitate to enjoy the pleasure of sex which is the greatest gift to humanity? By considering these facts in a positive manner I hope the things can change for better...
Premarital sex and Live in relationship gives more freedom to individual intern gives a release from the sexual distress, by attaining social equality among men and women and proper education and outlook about sex surely will reduce sexual abuse like rape. Now about premarital sex and live in relationship. It have both positive n negative effect. Positive in the sense, living together gives an opportunity to the individuals to know each other. Those who know each other can only see each other a few hours a day or in a week. This will be entirely different when those two persons have to live in d same place all d time. This helps to understand, try adjusting or if not possible sort out what is needed. This might reduce the high divorce rate in our country.
Premarital sex is solely depending on the individuals. If they feel it right they can go for it taking whole responsibility on them. But the negative side of this law is that now the college students will fall in love and start following this as it is supported by law which will be totally immature and disastrous.
Before following it ask yourself Are you mature enough to make this decision and are you able to tackle the after effects whatever it may be. Because these kind of things are practiced in western world though in a more practical in wise way in most cases and even if something goes wrong the government and the authorities support them well enough which we can`t even expect from Indian government no matter who rules.
So be wise, think twice before u decide.
