GEORGE THENGUMMOOTTIL

I am George Joseph (George Thengummoottil) from Kerala known as the Gods own Country: a little state in South India. An extra cuiosity and freedom from God allowed me travel far and wide out of the Gods own Country. My travels helped me collect memories and emotion: a sense of deep attachment to the various culture and the diversity in India. This deep attachment created a passion and love inside to document what I see and experience around me with my pen and camera. That is what my life is pulling me to!

When I grew up, I was little late to understand that life was taking me on a completely mysterious and never known roller-coaster ride through its own course and directions: an adventurous route with surprises every corner. My extra force to change the route made me stagnant. Now I listen to my life and follow it seeking adventure every corner.

At a very young age I was affected by a little known eye disease called Keratoconous. It took away the burden of academic achievements and made me free: made me different from others. It gave me two years of complete detachment: to hide my eyes from distractions around and be in myself. I felt every step I took was an achievement. Now I live learning about the possibilities of documenting what I see and feel around and helping other Keratoconous patients.Read More

The day I laughed the most in my life: several hours continuously with my students at Thimphu, Bhutan in 2014
during a late night party meeting all of them after four years. I wish I should not have worked there as I missed a
considerable portion of my heart there when I left the country.

BOOKS

The hills, people, culture and that altogether different environment inspired me to go out everyday evening with my camera and notebook to meet people to learn about the history of the place I have spend during my three year Under Graduate Program. My college-mate, Fr Jimmy Anjilithoppil (Present Director Navajyothi College) pushed me to get into it and make my first book 'The Story of Peermade'

PHOTOGRAPHY

From my young days, I send hours looking through the photographs of National Geographic Magazine.. trust me I haven't read even a single article in full. My curiosity about light inspired by these photographs helped me get off my ass: point on anything and everything I see and click: causing a lot of environmental damage with silver halide and other toxic chemicals. Later working under National Geographic Explorer Sandesh Kadur helped me learn a lot about how to use my photographs after shooting it.

PUBLICATIONS

I love scribling pages, but the gatekeepers at the publishing house were very shy to open the gates before me. Thanks to the mercy of a few editors combined with my enthusiasm to photography and (re)creative writing could fill up the pages of several glossy magazines, books and newspapers.
